Welcome to MAT153 :: Syllabus and Class Expectations

Welcome
Welcome to MAT153 – Web Design I. This is a Santa Barbara City College dual enrollment class that takes place at Santa Barbara High School as part of the MAD Academy. This class meets for one hour a day, Monday through Friday. You will be expected to complete work both in and outside of class.

About This Class
The objective of this class is for you to walk away with a solid introductory level of understanding of how to plan, design, and create web pages. You will be learning basic HTML coding, along with more advanced CSS. You will be introduced to Adobe Dreamweaver CS5 and leave this class with two completed web pages. You will also be learning about social media, Search Engine Optimization (SEO), and blogging using WordPress.com.

Grading and Class Expectations
This is a college-level class and you will be receiving a weighted grade. The expectations for this class are those of a college-level class, which means the class will move at a quick pace, have high expectations for student learning outcomes, and require students to work both in and outside of class.

You will be designing a minimum of two websites from scratch – one that will be a personal website showcasing your work, and another will be a group project that will be in conjunction with your English and History class. You will also be creating and maintaining a WordPress.com blog on a weekly basis. While many of these assignments will be very challenging, nothing will be impossible as long as YOU put effort into this class. Being on time daily, asking questions during and after class, and most importantly SHOWING UP will result in a higher chance of you succeeding in this class but ultimately you will EARN the grade you receive based on the quality of your work and ability to meet the set out expectations.

The current grading break down is as follows:
Projects (including your final web pages, mock up designs, etc) :: 50%
Classwork (including preparation for web pages, worksheets, participation) :: 20%
Blog Posts (weekly blog posts and content creation) :: 20%
Quizzes and other assessments :: 10%

Office Hours and Additional Lab Access
I am available most days during lunch or after school until 4pm as long as you make an appointment via email or verbally in class. The MAD Academy computer labs are open Monday through Friday until at least 4pm and may be open later when projects are nearing the due dates (based on student need and communication with teacher).

You can always contact me via email at ajmadacad@gmail.com or by coming to see me in the MAD Office between 10am and 4pm.

Computer Lab Rules, Student Integrity, and Student Learning Agreement
As a MAD Academy student, you have all signed a MAD Student Contract that can be found here and all policies will be upheld in this class. Just a reminder, the computer lab rules include NO FOOD or DRINKS in the lab and NO GAMES AT ANY TIMES. Additionally, cell phones are a great tool for updating blogs and gathering content, but they can also be an UNNECESSARY DISTRACTION. It is completely up to the instructor (…me) on whether or not a student may use a phone in class.
